Youth Day Newsletter, June 18, 2012

Dear Family and Friends,
Saturday, June 16th was Youth Day.  It is the second most important holiday for South Africans. (Freedom Day is the first).  Youth Day commemorates the start of the Soweto riots of 1976.  Thousands of students marched against the government declaration that ALL instruction in the black schools was to be done in the Afrikaans language.  It was the straw that broke the camels back, for the youth, living under the brutalities of the Apartheid regime.  Hundreds of school children  were killed on that day.  This famous picture of Hector Pieterson is a  small representation of the children who were killed.
All over the country there were marches and protests.  It seems that South Africa politics are a simmering pot ready to boil over.
In Mountainview we celebrated with over 250 children.
I had come earlier with a couple of missionary friends and the worship team from CCCCC.  Another truck was bringing the food and also a Youth Group of 7 people from a Bramley church . The Bramley group got into an accident close to Mountainview and 4 were taken to a clinic by ambulance.   As it turned out, there were minor injuries and the people that I came with, picked up the children from the clinic and the food and brought it to Mountainview.
Due to the accident, I was able to slowly share the message and explain salvation to the children.  The message was on JESUS…The WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE.  Many children accepted JESUS as their SAVIOUR.  Thank you LORD for the very special celebration!
The children played games, ate food and sang songs.  They even got “sweeties” (candy) and a handout on JESUS, the Way, Truth and Life.  Picture above is from 3 weeks ago as my camera stopped!
This next week the children will be out of school for a few weeks for winter break and we will start the outreaches again in the middle of July.
Blessings and love,
Jan

  1. I pray that God will send harvesters to your mission, Jan, and may He identify and prepare a man of God to pastor in the community. May our HOPE Africa receive favor from the government beyond their imaginations and may the Ward Councillor give a speedy and favorable answer about the property. And may you receive a sturdy, reliable vehicle for your work. In addition, may God bless your health and stamina, give you peaceful rest and strength for all of your tasks, my friend. Love, Gail
